    Dire Warning

When you're on-campus, you're within the University's IP range. So if you're using Google Scholar and click out to an article on a journal's website or in a subscription database, you will be seemlessly authenticated and given access to (pretty much) whatever we subscribe to.

When you're off campus, you must access stuff via the Library's website in order to get that authentication. If you click out to an article and the publisher wants you to pay for it, don't! Use the Periodicals/Journals link off the library homepage, and then if necessary go the Inter-Library Loan route. (See the other boxes on this page for more info about these two options.)
Just remember that there are differences in on-campus and off-campus access that go beyond logging in.

    Do we have this journal?

From the Library’s homepage, go to the Library Catalog.

    JNL OF WHATEVER

Change the Material Type to Periodicals. (Periodicals are newspapers, magazines & journals.)

Then search the title of the journal (not the title of the article.)

If St. Edward's has access to that journal, you'll see a list of the databases that it's in, plus the date range. (Or we might have the journal in print or microfilm! Same deal.) For example, see Consumer Reports, below:

    consumer repots

Check the date of your citation against that date range. Got a match? Then we have access.

Click the name of the database. You'll go to the journal "homepage" in the database. Then use the chronological navigation tools to find the volume you need, and scroll to find your article. For example:

    jnl homepage

If it's print or microfilm, it's at the library.

If we don't have access to your journal, you may request the article via Interlibrary Loan.

Getting stuff St. Ed's doesn't own

Getting articles or books St. Ed’s doesn’t own:

If you have used the Library Catalog and determined that St. Ed’s doesn’t have access to the book, article or journal you want, try one of these methods. Don’t ever pay for an article without trying Interlibrary Loan!

Interlibrary Loan: the library will try to borrow books or articles for you from other libraries at no charge.  Articles come via email, so make sure to register with an email account you check regularly.

TexShare: the library will issue you a card that allows you to access many other Texas libraries. Visit the Circulation Desk or click the link.
